12th Mar 2003 ICON.net Limited Wins National Award
The website that ICON.net Limited designed and built for Cheltenham Borough Council last year– www.cheltenham.gov.uk - has won the top award in the UK’s New Media Awards 2002. Incorporating intuitive navigation and a stylish design, together with a user-friendly bill payments system and search facility, the site swept the board in the award’s e-Government category.

Established more than five years ago, New Media Awards continues to set the standards in new media. The first New Media Awards were dedicated to promoting projects that embraced new technology, fresh thinking and creative management. This year, the theme has been expanded to include projects that use technology to revitalise and recreate dynamic working links between citizens, communities and government.

The e-Government category was designed to reward those local or central government departments or agencies that use new technologies to deliver their services to citizens more effectively. The award focused on those ventures that clearly demonstrate their commitment to providing the best service to citizens.

An impressive line-up of judges this year included Bill Edwards, Director of the Government’s Office of the e-Envoy, Claire Jones, Director of Strategy for Oracle Corporation UK Ltd., and Rosie Boycott, previously editor of The Independent and The Express.

A spokesman for the New Statesman said: 'We wanted projects that empower, educate and enhance services previously unavailable. 2002 has produced a great range, and tremendous number of quality nominations. Choosing the 2002 winners was difficult, with very little in terms of quality between the top placings.'

This is not the first time that the work of ICON.net Limited has been recognised and rewarded. In 2000, the site that we designed for Cheltenham’s tourism team was a finalist in the Local Government Association awards, plus the website implemented for Gloucester City Council was commended as an ‘example of good design’ by SOCITM, the Society for Information Technology Management, in their ‘Year 2000 Snapshot of Local Authorities’ Websites’.

Press Release

Gold Star Design to Help Fight Crime

A plan for helping to fight crime and the fear of crime in the city has been selected by the Home Office as one of the best in the south west region.

The Gloucester Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership was awarded a Gold Star by the Home Office Crime Reduction Research Team at Government South West as being the best urban strategy in the south west.

ICON.net Limited provided design and branding for the strategy and other related print and point of sale material. In addition to this a high profile website was implemented to support the Partnership and provide access to key areas of the strategy with user friendly navigation.

A spokesperson for the Partnership said 'We approached ICON.net Limited because we had confidence in their ability to deliver, skill base and experience with local government as well as their commitment to 'best value'.'

The Gloucester scheme is a partnership between Gloucestershire County Council, Gloucester City Council and Gloucestershire Police working together with other statutory and voluntary agencies aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime across the city. Similar partnerships operate across the south west and the rest of the country.
