The survey results are based on just over 1200 active web design companies details stored in the database during December 2003.

The survey covers four areas:

Geography: There are web designers in every county and most companies (and individuals) prefer working with local suppliers if they can find them. So where is the best place to look and how many are there in your locality?
Size: Web design is still an industry dominated by small companies, but how small is 'small'?
Time in business: What constitutes an 'old' web design company and what is the chance of finding one?
Speciality: With all the talk of e-commerce there must be plenty of web design companies specialising in it. So how many?

Geography
Over 15% of all UK web designers can be found in Greater London.
There is a graph (8K) of the number of designers in the top 30 postcodes of London.

Size
The average number of web designers per company is 3.6 but the most common is 2.
86% of all web design companies have 5 or less designers on the staff. There is a graph (4K) of the number of designers per company by percentage of the whole.

65% of all web design companies have 5 or less staff.
At the other extreme 8% of all companies have 20 or more staff.

Time in Business
Only 15.2% of the companies currently active were operating in 1995. The table below shows the gradual growth in companies over the last eight years.
